I've watched many 'feel good' movies in my time but this one is definitely the opposite. Although well written and acted, it just about reinforces every negative gay stereotype possible. Rather than attempt to summarise the plot, which is loosely centred around gay bashing and the different experiences of gay men relative to social class and age, I'll list the main gay character profiles:
1. Gay man gets married and has sex with the waiter on his wedding day!
2. Single gay male so lonely that he is desperate for sex to the extent of cottaging at any given opportunity.
3. Gay man who is seduced by a 14 year old male and is incapable of resisting despite his best efforts.
4. Married gay man who secretly indulges in lavatorial liaisons.
5. Decent gay man who is beaten to death while walking across Clapham Common.
In short, I really can't see the motivation behind this movie or what it is attempting to convey to the audience. I do know, however, that it would have made my 'coming out' a 1000 times harder had I seen it in my younger days.
I just hope that it doesn't effect those in the same predicament today so badly because times haven't really changed that much in many places (despite what some would have us believe).
